Curriculum

The 1st set of program modules is about the non-executive role

The NBP program prepares participants for their non-executive board membership by providing an overview of all aspects pertaining to their new task. Several subject domains are explored in depth, and specific and contemporary topics are discussed.

The 2nd set of program modules is about strategy: “The winning recipe”.

During the second year, we discuss the role of the non-executive board member in the strategy definition process, and how that process can vary from 'business as usual' situations to 'pivotal moments' which can completely change the future direction of a company.

The 3rd set of program modules is about control.

One of the key roles of the non-executive board is to ensure that the company stays in control and that the risks of losing control are adequately managed. Several aspects of this type of corporate control and the related risks of spinning out of control are of particular interest to non-executive board members.

Program modules are about “Organizing for sustainable success”.

Complementing the company's strategy and the challenge of staying in control is the need to organize for sustainable success. This is where a non-executive board often plays an active role, in various ways.

Executive Sessions

Executive sessions take place throughout the years organized around specific topics of interest to all groups in the New Board Program. The aim of these executive sessions is to provide deeper insight into specific topics high on the agenda of executive and non-executive boards. For example, topics may include: Private Equity: barbarians at the gate? The possible impact of IT projects, and Non-executives in conflict.

Peer Groups

During the first year, the NBP starts preparing participants for their new supervisory role by strengthening their awareness and non-executive skills through the Peer Group Program. This also helps turn participants into an effective network of peers that provides ongoing support and insight into their future non-executive role.

Peer groups have a three-fold purpose. They function as:

• A learning support group as participants work on and learn about the seven “New Board” competencies during modules, supported by professionals.

• An access point for mentors where participants can receive professional guidance from experienced non-executives. During the first year, the mentor’s role will be focused on helping peer group members with leads, giving them insight into branches and using their networks to obtain a suitable starting position as non-executive. Once a candidate has obtained a position, the mentor can act as a sparring partner for the new non-executive. Mentor meetingswill take place three times per year.

• Advisory groups to each other once they have a non-executive position. This takes place mainly outside the modules and peer groups are free to organize their own advisory meetings and frequency. They are also free to arrange supervision by a professional during these meetings, with or without program staff input.
